European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
