England and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland and the Scots also share a pool together, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing victory, with their opponents failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa until the final, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
