Approximately fifty vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Officers report they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to solve the case" and have appealed to the public for details.
A senior representative commented the attack rendered him stunned and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he posted on social media, referring to the killing of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
