The public service broadcaster committed a "major breach" of media regulations by omitting to mention that the narrator of a film about the Gaza conflict was the offspring of a Hamas representative, according to regulatory body Ofcom.
An investigation by Ofcom into Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has concluded that the film was "substantially inaccurate".
The BBC's director general had previously apologised, noting there had been "a major oversight in relation to accuracy".
The authority has ordered the broadcaster to air a peak-time declaration about its decisions.
"Since this amounts to a major infringement of our code, we are ordering the BBC to transmit a statement of our conclusions against it on the BBC's second channel at 9pm, with a timing to be finalised," it said.
'Potential to Erode Confidence'
The watchdog's announcement stated: "Our probe concluded that the film's lack of disclosure that the narrator's male guardian occupied a role in the Hamas-run authority was significantly deceptive.
"Consequently that the viewers did not have vital facts which may have been extremely pertinent to their evaluation of the narrator and the content he provided.
"Confidence is at the heart of the connection between a television network and its public, particularly for a state-funded media outlet such as the public broadcaster.
"This oversight had the risk to erode the significantly high amounts of credibility that audiences would have put in a BBC factual programme about the conflict in Gaza."
The programme was withdrawn from the BBC's streaming service in the month of February after the narrator's familial connections came to light, and in July an corporation's own inquiry determined it violated the corporation's journalistic standards on accuracy.
A corporation official commented: "The regulator's decision is in agreement with the conclusions of the internal assessment, that there was a significant failing in the film in relation to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines on accuracy, which corresponds to clause 2.2 of Ofcom's Broadcasting Code.
"We expressed regret for this and we comply with the authority's determination in its entirety. We will comply with the directive as soon as the schedule and language are confirmed."
